Comics is not a genre

Keep in mind that comics are a medium, not a genre. Whatever story you can imagine, you can share as a comic as well as prose.

Special challenge for writers

It is more difficult for a writer to catch the eye of an editor than an artist. An artist can display their skills visually, in a way that is quickly and easily digested and assessed. A writer has to convince an editor to read something they have written, and that simply takes more time. Furthermore, an editor is much less likely to read a script from an unknown, which means your best bet is to have a complete comic to shop around. Yes, that means art, and unless you are one of those enviable dual-classed, special snowflakes known as the Writer-Artist, having art for your comic will mean collaborating with an artist.

Don’t shop your Spider-Man fanfic

Yes, I have a script for a complete issue of Spider-Man that I wrote. Yes, I think it is pretty good (it involves Doc Ock and blue cheese). No, it will never see the light of day, unless I want to pay an artist to create it and then give it away as fanfic. The fact is that companies with established properties, like Marvel with Spider-Man, put themselves at risk for legal action when reading your Spider-Man script, on the chance your story is something similar to a story they already have in the works.

Writers write

It is far more important for you to produce new words than to promote the book you’ve just finished. As a writer you should be familiar with this idea. The same holds true on this topic: if you want to be a comic writer, make comics. Notice that was “make” comics, not “write” comics. Yes, learn how to write a comic script, and keep writing those, keep improving those. At the same time, you will need to get at least one comic made so that you have something to show.

Where to start?

If you want to be in the comic book industry, then get involved in the industry. With tools like Twitter and Facebook available to you, you don’t have to wait to ‘make it’ to get to know the people in the industry. Follow along and you will have access to those who HAVE made it, many of whom are very generous with dropping pearls of wisdom regarding the industry and the craft.
